- Basic Concept:
- API combines the best practices
in technical education with the direct
involvement of capable and dedicated
employers The API Program features
technical education that is aligned
with a nationally recognized curriculum
that integrates academic and technical
instruction. The key component of
the API Program is its work based
learning opportunity, a paid Internship.
The API Program requires that students
perform at the highest level in order
to be considered for a paid internship.
- Key Components:
- API program's key components include
classroom instruction based on nationally
recognized curriculum and skill standards;
paid internships, a workplace mentoring
program, tool scholarship (as needed),
linkages to apprenticeship programs
and potential to earn college credit.
- API Student Criteria:
- Students interested in participating
must meet high standards in order
to qualify. These standards include:
95% Attendance or higher, "B" average
or higher, and instructor recommendation.
The instructor evaluates students
on cooperation, teamwork, and other
factors that relate to employment
success
- Employer Criteria:
- Participating companies should have
the capacity to work with student
interns to provide work based learning
experiences. Companies interested
in participating will interview and
select from qualified candidates.
All participating companies will set
a standard wage for interns and will
hire the students through the LCCTC
Cooperative Education Program. Companies
will need to identify a skilled and
knowledgeable employee to act as the
Intern's mentor. Mentor training will
be provide to these individuals.
- API Program Process and Procedures:
- All students in the LCCTC programs are
informed of the API Programs and the
student requirements. Their performance
is evaluated at the end of the first
marking period. Student who meet the
criteria are available to interview
with participating employers. Employers
are to make selection and recommendation
on the students interviewed. Upon selection
students start their internship, one
day a week beginning the second marking,
two days per week beginning the 3rd
marking period, 3 day per week beginning
the March 15th and full time April 19th.
At the end of each marking period employers
provide wage increases as skills and
competence increase after evaluation.
The wage increase is set at an additional
50 cent per hour and is based on performance.
