Program Description: The Advanced Construction Technology Program (ACT Program) is an innovative educational program designed to provide worked based educational learning opportunities for students of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center’s construction programs that are built upon the advanced academic and advanced technical skills required by Commercial Construction Companies through out the Commonwealth. Students enrolled in this program will be taking an active learning role in the designing and building state of the art commercial facilities. The facilities to be built renovated ore reconfigured will include:
- Early Childhood
Education Center
- Transportation Technology Environmental Laboratory
- Allied Health Imaging Center
- Virtual Communication Studio
- Biotechnology Clean Room
These facilities will be owned by the Lancaster Career and Technology Center. When completed, these facilities will offer students the opportunity to learn in highly specialized environments, facilities that are necessary for the operation of innovative advanced level technical programs offered by LCCTC.
It is the intent of the ACT Program to build state of the art commercial facilities. The five buildings will be built using the most advanced techniques and materials available to today’s contractors. The buildings will be equipped with equipment that is based on the latest
technology used in the industry. The electrical system, heating/cooling systems and telecommunication system installed in the building will be of the leading edge technology. The instructional methodologies used in these facilities will include both virtual and traditional. Constructing these
types of buildings will require student and workers with high-level academic and technical skills.
The ACT Program will utilize the nationally recognized construction curriculum Wheels of Learning, which is curriculum of the Associated Builder and Contractor’s Apprenticeship Programs. In addition, the ACT Program will incorporate in the program of study advanced academic
courses such as Algebra II, Plane and Solid Geometry, Trigonometry, College Prep English, Technical Writing, Physics, Computer Sciences and other courses that are related to construction technology.
Specific occupational classes that will be a part of the program will include, Architectural Design, HVAC, Plumbing, Carpentry, and Masonry, Electrical, Cabinet Making and Millwork, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Computer Network Engineering and Commercial Construction Management.
The Act Program will utilize highly qualified teachers knowledgeable in commercial construction. In addition, the program will utilize experienced and knowledge construction professionals as student mentors. It will be the responsibility of the teachers and mentors to conduct the program in order to aid students to achieve mastery of commercial construction skills.
The ACT Program is not the type of program found as a part of regular academic program of study at public school in the Commonwealth. Rather, the ACT Program enhances the program of study of secondary students planning to pursue Construction Careers. The ACT Program is an industry base initiative designed to set students up to follow a specific path of academic and technical courses that can lead to an Apprenticeship and/ or a college education and Careers in Construction.
Specifically the ACT Program will:
- Integrate National Skills Standard Curriculum within the building project
- Supplement the instructional programs of the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center
- Provide a clear focus for the delivery of instruction that use methodology adapted from an apprenticeship model that teaches academic and technical skill in context of construction occupations.
- Provide a standard based instruction program built on both PSSA criteria, industry standards and college admission standards.
- Utilize experienced and knowledge professional construction personnel along with highly qualified teacher to deliver the instructional program.
- Utilize internships, cooperative educational programs, apprenticeships and other work based learning opportunities.
- Provide advanced placement opportunities in the form of credits will area community colleges and advanced standing in the Associated Builders on Contractors Apprenticeship Program.
- Build and equip a facility that is to be use as Professional Education Center for Early Childhood.
The Lancaster Country Career and Technology Center is the public school that will be participating in this program. A letter of support is provided as apart of this submission. The Lancaster County Career & Technology Center will utilize the tax credits for supplies and building
materials used by students enrolled in the program. It is understood that the portions of the building by contractor, these material and supplies would not be eligible.
